In World War II Russia and Great Britain occupied the country and installed Mohammed Reza Pahlevi as shah (1941). He was overthrown (1979) by a revolution led by the Ayatollah Khomeini. The name of the country was officially changed to Iran in 1935. Tehran is the capital and the largest city.
